BRICS Countries India & Russia Speak: Here’s What They Discussed

Leaders of BRICS countries India and Russia spoke at length on Monday discussing various issues on strategic partnerships. The telephonic conversation between India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russia’s President Vladimir Putin revolved around a roadmap for future initiatives. Russia is leading the charge for BRICS this year as the next summit will be held in October 2024 in the Kazan region.

The 16th BRICS summit in Russia will see the new extended bloc of 10 countries decide the course of the next action. De-dollarization is the main initiative of BRICS and the alliance could likely decide on the formation of a new currency. India’s Prime Minister Modi confirmed that he had a positive and promising discussion with Russia’s President Putin. Both India and Russia have friendly relations that date back for decades. Here’s what Modi discussed with BRICS ally Putin during the telephone conversation this week.

Modi tweeted after the conversation with Putin and said, “Had a good conversation with President Putin. We discussed various positive developments in our Special & Privileged Strategic Partnership and agreed to chalk out a roadmap for future initiatives. We also had a useful exchange of views on various regional and global issues, including Russia’s Presidency of the BRICS”.

Kremlin’s press office released a statement after the conversation saying, “It has been agreed to continue personal contacts,” with India. The telephonic interaction comes weeks after India’s Foreign Affairs Minister S Jaishankar visited Russia. S Jaishankar held talks and met with Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
